This picture of the Messiah as king is assumed in Daniel 9, when Gabriel reveals Jerusalem’s future to Daniel. Here “Messiah” (9:25–26) is also called “a Most Holy One” (9:24) and “a Leader” (9:25–26) who confirms a covenant. In an explicit reference to Christ’s crucifixion and vicarious atonement, “Messiah will be cut off and have nothing” (9:26) in order “to end transgression, to finish sin, and to atone for iniquity” (9:24). The Son of God is called “the Prince of the army” in 8:11, and 10:4–21
